Cog question
I vaguely recall seeing an article and/or plans about how to make a medieval cog ship suitable to allow my Lamming figures to put to sea. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Now for a gratuitous old school illustration-
Not a cog, but that's just a matter of drawing another set of sides and fore and aft battlements: https://easterngarrison.blogspot.com/p/tealight-ironclads.html
There's been several articles over the years about making ships for wargaming but nothing stands out about cogs. Sarissa do a lasercut kit https://sarissa-precision.com/products/medieval-cog-sailing-ship-28mm It might also be worth a look at some of the downloadable card model websites.
A quick look in my database of articles (https://snv-ttm.blogspot.com/p/wargames-magazine-database.html) gives me a likely candidate: "Cogged Out", Tony harwood, WSS 113 (MAr/Apr 2021). Link here: http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2021/03/14th-century-cog-wargames-soldiers.html and here: http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2021/03/14th-century-cog-w-s-s-additional.html
It’s the kind of thing that might be in Featherstone’s Naval Wargames Book If you have this book or reprint (I believe Jack Alexander Of Jacklex fame contributed some ship designs to this book). Mine is packed away at the moment. https://manoftinblog.wordpress.com/2018/08/23/featherstone-and-co-naval-war-games/
Another alternative is the good old plastic pirate ship converted? Two possible examples: https://poundstoreplasticwarriors.wordpress.com/2021/09/18/pirate-ship-play-set-ahoy/
Those Cheap tat sold at the seaside or online pirate bag playsets with badly painted 54mm ish pirates, cannons etc and the odd out of scale with the rest plastic ship (if you can still find them) such as here: https://manoftinblog.wordpress.com/2020/04/28/making-a-martello-tower-from-scrap-fort-crumble/
I posted something about building cogs about 10 years or so ago. These were designed for DBM type armies, but, upscaled, might be able to carry soldiers or crew. At any rate, I hope this is in some way helpful... http://archdukepiccolo.blogspot.com/2012/02/mediaeval-cogs.html Cheers, Ion
I remember seeing a post or an article about the same thing not long ago too, but I can’t remember where!
The wargaming raft did one from scratch in 15mm https://wargamingraft.wordpress.com/2014/05/31/scratchbuilding-a-medieval-cog/
It appears that Sarissa Precision has a “relatively” inexpensive one for sale, but I can’t vouch for the company, maybe someone else can? https://sarissa-precision.com/products/medieval-cog-sailing-ship-28mm
I found the same Wargaming Raft one as Mardigan, plus there are a few images of a scratch built one here https://dalauppror.blogspot.com/2015/07/scratch-built-medieval-cog.html
Not plans or models, but can highly recommend The Wooden Fighting Ship in the Royal Navy, author HH Archibold. Large very well illustrated hardback. Second hand copies, post free UK, around a tenner or less.

Peter Dennis at Peter Dennis Paperboys does a 28mm cog and other period ships in paper. They run 3 pounds.

There are a couple Paperboys ones in the RUS series - inexpensive, resizeable and ready-painted.
ReplyDeleteAm tempted…
