Meanwhile in the Middle Ages

Mustering for next week’s game - a trip back to the Middle Ages as they should have been…

The rules to be used, good old school ones from the Military Modelling Annual of nineteen canteen or there about. Written by Charles Grant.
Baron Benevolence, his banner bearer, and his knights practice for the coming skirmish. Meanwhile archers and peasants shoot at  targets to improve their skill with the longbow.
The Baron’s sergeants drill with pole arms whilst the Baroness exchanges  pleasantries with the Sorcerer and his apprentice.
Another couple of photos of the idyllic afternoon on the field of Mars. Note lack of stereotypical mud .
Figures are all Lamming currently available here-
More news next week when the long anticipated skirmish takes place with the retinue of Sir Reginald Karon…

  1. The Lamming medievals have been some of my favorite posts! Do you know of anywhere one could still procure those rules by Grant? As it stands, it’s getting harder to come by older sets and it’s a shame. I really need to order one of Featherstone’s volumes before they disappear!

    1. All of Featherstone's books are available from John Curry's History of Wargaming project, and a handful are available (semi-legally) on Archive.org.

I'd like to see those rules too.

    3. Any chance you could give us a summary of the rules? Are they for unit actions or can they scale down to man-to-man?

  4. Looking forward to it, Alan. But just realised that Sir Reginald doesn't have a banner (yet!?).

  8. There appears to be loads of military modelling issues on ebay though searching would be easier with something more exact than "nineteen canteen" ;-)

  9. Tres those Lamming figures are very nice. I think Terry Wise's book on Medieval Warfare has a set of old-school rules, which might be interesting..

  10. I've looked through my old issues of Military Modelling but with no success. It would be between 1971 when it started and 1979 when Charles (senior) died. The 1983 annual contains a simple set of medieval rules by Geoff Bayton. And lots of other good articles, oh that wargames magazines were half as good these days.
