Battle of Clifton, part the first

 Had a most enjoyable visit to Ronnie’s today to fight a battle set in the village of Clifton. I commanded the Government forces in my on table persona of Graf  Von  Gruber, that soldier of fortune and renown. Ronnie commanded the Jacobites. Rules used were the Close Wars ones from War Games by Donald Featherstone.


Government highland troops and dismounted dragoons approach the outskirts of the village. Who might be lurking within?

Redcoats move with caution towards the village ever alert for signs of the rebels…
The Government highlanders sot some rebels behind some dry stane dyke walls- they look determined to hold Clifton for the Pretender.
The rebels are engaged both with cold steel and musket volleys. Graf  Von Gruber commands his men with an iron will from the back.
Meanwhile on the other flank Government mounted troops skirt round the village boundaries.

In the centre the Redcoats make their way towards a hedged enclosure keeping their eyes and ears open.

    I know Clifton Moor, sadly much of it now under a new housing project .

      I believe there is a plaque to commemorate the action and the village prides itself on being the last battle on English soil.

    Interesting! As I love Close Wars, I'm curious how and if you modified it to work in a more "open field" style.

      Didn’t really modify them at all, just made the odd common sense decision during the game or through dice to see if a or b happened.
