Making progress

I have been making some progress with irregulars troops to serve Army Star Spangled or Maple Leaf Country. The battered toy soldiers were mended with matchsticks, masking tape and glue ( sounds like something the mice in Bagpuss would use) and are currently undergoing painting-

Here they were as they arrived with the conversions begun  , in a sorry state but filled with potential for gaming. Arms have been added to the standing cowboys and the matchsticks and taping begun.

  1. Great work Tradgardmastare - lovely to see these figures coming back to life.

    1. It gladdens my spirit to do so. They have served well and deserve a chance to serve again.

  2. Masking tape? Interesting. I'm so used to various epoxy puttees that I rarely think of more locally available and suitably old fashioned methods. I have one or two antiques that have had similar treatment by the original owner when he was a lad.

    1. I have eczema and sometimes my hands don’t really enjoy the kneading together of putty. I find it is an altogether pleasanter way of working. I am interested to hear of this way being used by the original owner of your figures. Perhaps even H G Wells did something similar, who knows.

  3. Good to see the old traditional matchstick repairs still in use! Liked the Bagpuss mice recollection - one of my favourite episodes was where they faked a biscuit factory using just one chocolate biscuit which was rolled out down the chute, carted away out of sight round the back and represented as an entirely new biscuit. The sole odd ingredients were declared to be the wondrous sounding " Butterbeans and Breadcrumbs". I'm sure there is a political analogy there somewhere ...

    1. My favourite Bagpuss episode too. I think I got the matchstick & masking tape ( sound like Country solicitors) from you as an idea. I do find it quite satisfying to use. Yesterday I used non gel superglue for the first time for ages and had forgotten its propensity to glue all things together including me!

  4. Matchsticks and masking tape ... I had never thought about using these materials to repair toy soldiers. Thanks for sharing this. Cheers, Karl

    1. You are too kind. I see myself more as a toy soldier bodger. Results are a tad rustic but they work.
