1790- figures and background

“  Historians agree, if they agree about anything, that the latter part of the eighteenth century was a time of turmoil in the Duchy of Tradgardland. The bad harvests , severe winters, combined with the incessant claims to the Ducal title by the Duke’s younger brother , meant it was a time of uncertainty internally and concern externally within the Holy Roman Empire.”

From Romilly’s “ Shorter history and notes upon the Duchy of Tradgardland for the aid of visitors.”

I thought people might be interested to hear my plans , so far regarding 28mm figures raised for the project-

In Swedish style uniforms-

Two units of 24 dragoons serving on foot

Two units of 48 infantry

In Russian style uniforms

Two units of forty infantry

In Norwegian style uniforms-

One unit of thirty infantry

One unit of 10 jaegers

One unit of fourteen ski troops

These are currently being worked on.

Considering whether to base the figures on simple felt topped mdf ( like the Jacobites) or otherwise…

  1. Wonderful stuff, Alan. Large Regiments; really looking forward to seeing them. I'd go with simple basing for such a project, even individually based but that's probably impractical. But I'm sure that "Romilly" would have been more interested in the appearance rather than any element of practicality.

    1. Thanks Ronnie,
I do hope you will be happy to command one side in the games to come. I am pretty certain that l will go for felt.
Hopefully I will be able to share some other extracts from Romilly’s excellent writings on the period

  2. This sounds like it will be an interesting project to follow along with...looking forward to seeing some painted figures...which range are you sourcing the figures from?

    1. Thanks. The Swedish and Russian style uniforms are from the North Star Potemkin range, the ski troops are Steve Barber, the jaegers Eureka and the Norwegian style are Perry. I too eagerly await the painted figures.

  4. Project taking shape nicely, I would base them felt topped mdf, I really like the look of that. Going to be some lovely looking units on show, really looking forward to seeing them when done.

  5. I’m hoping it should look great on the table top, with accompanying vignettes and other frippery. The felt is the way forward.
